The power of hydrogen in water and air
The discussion about the healing power of hydrogen gas is not new: as early as 1794, the inventor of the steam engine James Watt constructed the first inhalation machine for the gas H1766, which was discovered in 2, for the English physician Thomas Beddoes. Beddoes and other doctors were already using this to treat respiratory diseases.
H2 is the smallest of all molecules and can therefore reach every problem area in the body, no matter how small. It is used by today's researchers as an antioxidant against malicious free radicals, as an anti-inflammatory, to promote homeostasis and energy production in cells.1)
Two forms of application have emerged in the technology since 2005: On the one hand, the H2 gas is bubbled under pressure into drinking water. On the other hand, it is added to the air we breathe through inhalation devices. 2)

Hydrogen waterA completely new type of drinking water
We all know sparkling water. CO2 gas is added to the water, which forms carbonic acid and makes the water acidic. CO2 is an exhaust gas from the combustion of carbon with oxygen. People also breathe it out because they burn food with oxygen to use the energy contained in hydrogen.
When we drink sparkling water, we give ourselves a gas that we actually want to eliminate. CO2 gas has an anesthetic effect, which is why it is still used in slaughterhouses. Why is sparkling water still sometimes popular to drink? Because in small doses it also has a relaxing effect, similar to the popular “after-work beer”, which contains alcohol as well as CO2 gas.
Every reasonably health-conscious person knows that in order to cover their daily water requirement of at least 0,33 liters per 10 kg of body weight, it would be better not to just drink alcoholic beverages, coffee and sparkling water, but rather to drink a larger amount of still water. But many people don't like that. Why actually?
The reason probably lies in our genes. Since humanity became civilized, it has been treating water because natural water is often contaminated or contains dangerous pollutants such as heavy metals. Even 5000 years ago there were laws that water had to be boiled, and the first advanced civilizations only drank boiled water in the form of beer, tea or mixtures of water and wine.
The widespread aversion to still water is slowly changing with the advent of hydrogen water, the “sparkling water of the 21st century.” In contrast to CO2 gas, which bubbles in very large bubbles and quickly causes a “burp,” the rising H2 bubbles are 50 times smaller than those of CO2 gas. It doesn't sparkle that much because it doesn't taste so sour, but you prefer to drink it.
Hydrogen water: Do it yourself!
Yes, you can also buy bottled H2 water, at least in the USA and the Far East. It is available in disposable cans or bags, at the price of a bottle of liquor per liter and has a tremendous impact on the environment. But you don't have to copy everything. We also reject this because the H2 concentration values of these products that we check are often stated to be far inflated and do not meet the requirements of research. We therefore recommend: Do-it-yourself!

Acidic, pH-neutral or basic is one of the first questions you should ask yourself if you want to start making your own hydrogen water. Because every variant is possible these days. You can choose what suits your health and taste needs.
This brings us to a point that is very important: When we drink hydrogen water, we not only absorb the dissolved hydrogen, but also drinking water. It should of course be free of pollutants and therefore appropriately filtered, which most devices for producing hydrogen water are equipped for.
When water is absorbed from the digestive system (small intestine) into the bloodstream, the body must adjust it to the blood pH of 7,35 - 7,45. So consuming acidic sparkling water with a pH of 4,5 is more difficult than consuming slightly alkaline water. This is not a problem for a young, healthy person. For those who are overly acidic, yes.
The solution: Electric water ionizer
Water ionizers are connected to the water pipe and produce filtered hydrogen water in a matter of seconds, which with an increased pH value also helps to balance the acid/base balance. They ensure constant pollutant removal through drinking water filters and require a power supply for the electrolytic cell. The originally German technology has been developed in Japan and Korea and has been tailored to European water conditions by Aquavolta®.
Electric water ionizers Due to their design, they can dissolve a maximum of 1,6 mg/l H2 gas in the water; on average it is around 0,8 to 1,0 mg/l. They are available as desktop or built-in models. Hydrogen booster - on the go
Electrolytic hydrogen bubblers with PEM cells and batteries that can be recharged using any USB socket are absolutely trendy. Since they work with a gas pressure of 2 – 4 bar, they can enrich the water with H1,6 gas far beyond the standard saturation limit of 2 mg/l. These little bubblers are also called H2 boosters. In contrast to water ionizers, you can also use these Reverse osmosis water use. For 0,35 liters of hydrogen-saturated water you need approx. 5 minutes. One battery charge is enough for at least 5 applications. The QR code takes you directly to the description of our various H2 boosters.
Water ionizer without electricity – Aquavolta® H2 -Rocket & Aquavolta® Osminion®
Breaking down water into its ions and producing hydrogen gas from it is also possible without a socket or batteries. Our new form of highly porous mixed ceramic called Minerade® enables the so-called micro-electrolysis.
In a 5-year joint project in 2020, we succeeded in developing the first electricity-free water ionizer “Made in Germany”, which far exceeds any electricity-powered water ionizer in terms of hydrogen performance Hydrogen boosters with PEM cells is equal. The system of our new models Aquavolta® H2 Rocket and Aquavolta® Osminion® works with a hydrogen pressure of up to 8 bar.
- The Aquavolta® H-Rocket table-top version has two replaceable water filters and a Minerade® pressure chamber. The filter performance corresponds to that of an electric water ionizer with 2 internal filters. There is a professional, catering-approved tap on the front.

Inhale hydrogen-rich air
The fastest way to introduce H2 into the human body is to inhale H2 in an H2/air mixture containing 1-4% hydrogen gas. At higher concentrations the air would be flammable. In order to adhere to this safety window, permitted inhalers for home use only produce between 100 and 300 milliliters of pure H2 gas per minute.
Inhalation takes place via a nasal cannula with an approximately 1,5 m long tube, which allows a small radius of movement around the electrically operated H2 generator. For example, you can sleep, watch TV, make phone calls, play cards or work on the computer.
In general, an inhalation time of at least half an hour is recommended. After the previously selected time has elapsed, the devices stop automatically.
The indications given in previous application studies are strokes, Parkinson's disease, chronic and acute lung and heart diseases.1)
H2 inhalers are also preferred in medicine and physiotherapy because, for example, you cannot drink during anesthesia, radiation or massage. In the aftercare of radiation therapy, acute heart and circulatory failure, visual impairments and cerebral diseases, more and more scientifically supported experiments are being carried out on how inhalation of hydrogen-rich air can support classical medicine.
We mainly deal with H2 inhalers for home use or in sports and cosmetic studios, hairdressing salons and wellness facilities. Athletes use H2 inhalers especially in the recovery phase after training.
Drink and Inhale | Aquavolta® Cavallo and Aquavolta® Nafion 117
A device like the Aquavolta® Cavallo or the Aquavolta® Nafion 117 produces 300 ml/min of H2 gas. This means that it delivers 30 liters or 9 milligrams of H810 within 2 minutes of inhalation. On the other hand, if you drink a liter of fully saturated hydrogen water, you only get 17,8 ml of hydrogen gas, or 1,6 mg.
Today's research is fairly unanimous that a daily dose should be 1-3 mg. This is achieved by drinking hydrogen-rich water. With supersaturated water at 3 mg/l, as it comes from a booster, the Aquavolta® Osminion® or the Aquavolta® Rocket You can easily reach your daily dose by drinking one liter. However, you reach this dose much more quickly with inhalation and can maintain it over a longer period of time, while drinking only gives a short H2 boost.
According to the majority of researchers, inhaling hydrogen-rich air is a sensible addition to drinking hydrogen-rich water, even if not all known effects can be achieved. For example, the production of the important hormone GHRELIN only stimulated when the hydrogen is absorbed through water in the stomach.1)
It is important to know that it is not necessarily a very large amount of hydrogen gas that matters, but that even a very small amount of H2 gas has signaling effects on gene switches. Expressed in an image, this means: When the light switch is turned on, the room becomes bright. Inhalation is a quicker light switch, but it doesn't make it any brighter.
Hydrogen inhalers In principle, they are also suitable for producing hydrogen water and other hydrogen drinks such as smoothies/juices. To do this, you have to hold a hose with the hydrogen gas produced below the water level. However, the time required for this is about 5 times longer than with an H2 booster and more than 1,6 mg/l cannot be achieved.
The status of the H2/O2 mixed gas discussion
Hydrogen inhalers from Aquavolta® use a PEM electrolysis cell to obtain 99,995% pure H2 gas from double-distilled laboratory water. We reject any other method, especially the use of Browns gas generators that work with industrial alkaline electrolysis, because without professional post-filtration Browns gas poses a danger to the respiratory tract due to impurities. Brown's gas consists mainly - but not only - of hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) in a ratio of 1:2. It has its place in welding technology and can be used as a fuel additive. In the health sector, we see no room for brown gas and warn against inhaling it.
Hydrogen inhalers from Aquavolta® also produce a by-product – but on a clean separate path – always pure O gas. With the Aquavolta® models H2 cube, Horse and Nafion 117 You can also add half the amount of O2 to the H2 produced for inhalation using a Y-tube. There has been little research on the benefits of this inhalation mixture. But at least it has been a recommendation in the Chinese guidelines for the treatment of Covid 2020 intensive care patients since 19) However, a recommendation for lay users cannot yet be derived from this.
