The ORP meter is a tool commonly used by service personnel and technicians in the commercial and industrial sectors, including environmental, wastewater treatment, catering, pool & spa and horticulture. Combined with other measured parameters such as temperature, pH and chlorine content, a high positive redox measurement can indicate the effectiveness of disinfectants (oxidants) in killing various pathogens.
Figure 1) shows a diagram of a typical portable ORP meter. Despite the similarity to a standard high impedance digital voltmeter, there is one important difference, and that is the meter's ORP sensor electrode. The electrode (also called “probe”) is designed to be immersed in a water sample and is made of a low-reaction, oxidation-resistant metal, usually platinum.
The meter also contains a second internal reference electrode (usually silver-silver chloride) mounted in the housing. This electrode generates a reference voltage with which the voltage of the platinum electrode is compared.
While ORP probes are integrated into the meter's housing to form smaller, portable units, larger meters typically have probes located externally in a separate housing and connected to the meter via a flexible cable.
When placed in a water sample, the platinum surface of the electrode either loses or accepts electrons, depending on the composition of the water.
This transfer of electrons creates a very small voltage. The meter's internal electronics processes the voltage, compares it with the voltage generated by the internal reference and displays the resulting ORP value in millivolts (mV).
Depending on the type of agents dissolved in the water, the polarity of the displayed voltage is either positive (indicating the presence of oxidizing agents) or negative (indicating the presence of reducing agents).
ORP meters are available in a wide range of prices, from inexpensive portable devices for home use to more sophisticated industrial and laboratory models.
