Does it make sense to buy a pH redox combination meter?

 pH redox combination meter?

Pure redox measuring devices are significantly more expensive than pH measuring devices. Nevertheless, the same restrictions apply here as under the heading —> pH measurement described.

The combination devices I know are “factory calibrated” in the redox measurement range and cannot be recalibrated, which is actually necessary for every measurement of activated water. Do not buy!

I found the most stable redox electrode to date in a device from “American Marine Pinpoint”. But as I said, this is something for specialists and you often have to replace the electrodes at great expense because the acidic active water in particular attacks them very quickly. It is used to determine precise values be sure It is necessary to rub the electrode after each measurement series with electro-activated water using the polishing strip, which is usually not included as it is very expensive. If you forget this, you will get completely wrong readings.

Incidentally, the redox potentials measured with the usual redox measuring devices (CSE = Common Siver Electrode, sometimes also called Ag/AgCl) do not correspond to the scientific standard Eh (sometimes also SHE = Standard Hydrogenium Electrode). When comparing measured values, the reference electrode used must always be specified. There are also electrodes with mercury or gold, for which there are no shortcuts. These must also be stated together with the measured value. Otherwise the values are up in the air, because redox values are always only reference values for a specific electrode.

Conversion: CSE (mV) + 207 mV = Eh and vice versa Eh (SHE) mV minus 207 mV = CSE. The reference temperature is 250 C. Good devices also record the temperature and correct the measured value accordingly. There are also special reference electrodes with other conversion parameters, but CSE and SHE are the most commonly used.

The safest way would be to measure the dissolved hydrogen, (->Hydrogen measurement) which largely determines the negative redox potential. However, suitable measuring devices are very expensive and belong in the hands of specialists.

A simple and useful way to demonstrate the negative redox potential and antioxidant abilities of alkaline activated water is, for example, the iodine test. Alkaline water will not turn brown with a drop of iodine solution.

Redox combination measuring device iodine solution

  • Tap water with iodine solution
  • Electrolyzed alkaline water (EAW) pH 9.5 (basic active water) with the same
  • Amount of iodine solution is stirred
  • The iodine solution decolorizes in EAW
  • The same decolorization occurs with the addition of vitamin C (1 g)

This allows the redox potential to be determined, at least in relative terms, without having a complicated instrument:

The more drops of iodine that can be decolorized, the lower the redox potential of the water. Unfortunately, iodine solution is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

An even simpler method takes about 3 hours. The time depends on how oxidizing the water used is. This method allows you to easily compare different types of water in terms of their redox potential. In the measurement example I use the famous, supposedly antioxidant water from the slate mine in Nordenau, which I have already described on page 81:

Fine steel wool to test the antioxidant abilities of water. The steel wool was inserted 3 hours before the test.
Left to right:

  • “Nordenau” bottled water. pH 7,5. ORP + 266mV (CSE)
  • Alkaline active water pH 9,5, ORP – 551 mV (CSE) from Munich tap water.
  • Deionized water with 2g metallic magnesium.
